In 2007, Mariko started her own side project as an outlet for her passion to express “real creativity.” Originally she started this side project with her best friend living in Japan, and they named their project “CALICO.”
With both of them being very busy with their full-time jobs and not being able to have enough commitment due to living far away from each other, the collaboration did not work. Mariko, however, still wanted to do something… something fun, something she liked spending time with, something that she loves, something that she wanted to share with others.
On Chistmas of 2007, Mariko’s parents in law stuffed her stocking full of unique presents, including some “vintage feedsacks,” which they found from Mariko’s favorite Antique store in CT. That introduction to the old feedsacks became a huge influence on her side project. This was how her first feedsack tote was made…….and in turn M.N.DAVIS & SON
